Masked Media

By 2021, the Philippines was the 7th deadliest country for journalists in the world. Since the media are constantly being silenced, the National Union of Journalists of the Philippines (NUJP) decided to show what was happening instead by using a medium made ubiquitous by the pandemic – the face mask. We designed the mask with a red hand covering the mouth of the wearer, with real news clippings about press repression as background. Any wearer then becomes part of the message with a simple post or selfie. These masks were first worn by the Media, garnering support for our cause. They were then sold on Shopee and Lazada to raise Legal Defense Funds for arrested journalists. The funds raised by the campaign helped litigate 6 cases and free 9 journalists. Because the best way to support press freedom is to help give press people their freedom. And the battle for press freedom continues. As media practitioners ourselves, Ace Saatchi and Saatchi continues to support this kind of advocacy by NUJP. For as long as there is press repression, there will be Masked Media.
