The Crowdsourced Nickname

TNT was a 16-year-old prepaid mobile brand that offered affordable services for calls, texts, and mobile internet. When it wanted to reintroduce itself to a younger target market—the current crop of Pinoy teens—we chose a way that was close to the hearts of these kids: basketball. Despite his skill and fame, professional basketball player Ranidel De Ocampo of the TNT KaTropa team did not have a cool nickname. We created a Facebook video featuring Ranidel himself, presenting various moniker options. The social media reactions of the various fans were key to selection of the final nickname. After 1.2 million video views and much fan involvement, Ranidel gained his new nickname of “Hodor.” This nickname is used until today, by fans, sportscasters and media alike. This was a fitting demonstration of what TNT’s mobile internet service can do.
